America is NOT a Christian nation

Biked a lot today. Met with Dale at his new house in Strathcona. Strathcona is such a wierd area. It is a very nice area with beautiful houses and lots of trees and parks. But it borders the downtown east-side which is such a rough area.

I've noticed lately that wherever I go now, I wonder if there are any churches in the area, or how I would go about planting a church there. Like Strathcona, how would I plant a church there? No idea.

I just cracked a new book: "The Myth of a Christian Nation" by Greg Boyd. This guy rules. I've decided to put some excerpts into all of my posts until I finish the book.

"For some evangelicals, the Kingdom of God is largely centered on "taking America back for God", voting for the Christian candidate, outlawing abortion, outlawing gay marriage, winning the culture war, defending pol. freedom at home and abroad, keeping the phrase "under God" in the pledge of allegiance, fighting for prayer in the public schools and fighting to display the 10 commandments in government buildings." - 11

"For many in America and around the world the American flag has smothered the glory of the Cross, and the ugliness of our American version of Caesar has squelched the radiant love of Christ." - 13

Quite right, America is NOT a christian nation, they founded America on the principle of the separation of church and state.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof . . . ." 1st Amendment of the American Bill of Rights (establishment clause)

America has never been a christian nation and never will be, as long as it is America. Because the intent of the American flag was never to glorify the cross, only to symbolize a nation, a nation of numerous religions, it is odd that Dr. Boyd would criticize it for failing to do what it was never intended to do.

We are several months out of even the most limited pandemic restrictions. I cannot remember the last time I wore a mask. When I see someone wearing a mask, it feels nostalgic - a reminder of a strange time when that person was the norm and I - the unmasked one would look strange. Coaster goes up (a little)

Unused photo from the Globe and Mail shoot. So, last night and all day today I was on the top floor of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Vancouver. Quite auspicious surroundings for church council/pastors meetings! there were stunning views of the North Shore mountains, Stanley Park and the downtown buildings. The meetings were lengthy, exhausting and a lot of work. Basically, FBC has been on a year long journey of crafting its vision statement and core values - we did it with the assistance of a coach from Outreach Canada. We are coming down the home stretch and needed to hammer out everything for presentation to the congregation. Today was the first day that I have begun to feel lighter and ready to resume the work. Although still feeling wounded from this whole mess, I'm ready to limp on. Where the Light Falls

I've read two books by Augustine - City of God and Confessions. I think I've read his confessions 3 times. I like him because he is a good writer, has lots of self-insight, and loves God passionately. He was very honest about his pre-Christian life. At one point he makes this observation: "I had my back toward the light, and my face toward the things on which the light falls." Most people have their back to the light - and they focus where his light falls. Where the light falls refers to God's common grace. God does not keep good things only for those who follow him. Because he is good he distributes his blessings and grace widely. Where the light falls are places of grace: art, music, beauty, sunshine, loving relationships, a baby's smile. But - these things are not the light - to enjoy and encounter the light, we must turn around and follow the rays of light back to the source. What is the source of beauty, love, and truth?
