The Commute

So, the commute is driving me nuts. I liked it the first few times. Now, its just brutal. The only thing I like, is that I can listen to a good sermon by Rob Bell or Ravi Zacharias on my ipod.

I listened to Anne Lamott on Tapestry. I think I've read two of her books before - but didn't really like them. I might give her another chance after listening to her today - I really liked most of what she had to say. She has a very unique way of expressing her faith.

Adam and I have been taking parent and tot tennis lessons. They're actually tot lessons, and the parents kinds help out. It's really cute - the kids are all 3-5. They have little rackets, low pressure balls and low nets. Monday and Tuesday, Adam was getting really frustrated and angry and would just not do anything. Today was better - he actually was pretty good. I still think soccer might be his sport - he can kick the ball pretty good.

There's one kid in the class who doesn't listen to anything the teacher says - he just rips around the court, doing whatever he wants. The Dad just kinda follows him around, gently trying to prod him back to the lesson. I couldn't believe how little control this Dad had over his kid. Either, he just didn't care or he's into some loopy parenting philosophy which teaches - don't do anything. I find it quite irritating, actually.

Things continue to go swimmingly with the church. I've decided to take Saturdays as my day off, instead of Mondays. I used to take Mondays off because I preached Sunday nights before. But now that I'll be preaching Sunday mornings, I can rest Sunday afternoons and be ready to be back at it Monday morning.

Is it possible that the other dad was just acknowledging the fact that his kid couldn't care less about tennis, and was therefore letting him do his own thing?

Then why did he enroll him, and why do they keep coming back? Adam would get angry and frustrated, but I see it as an opportunity to teach him perseverance and not giving up. This kid doesn't listen to anything his dad or the tennis instructor says.
