Last Night

Well, this is it. After calling downtown Vancouver home for 7(!) years, we are moving away. We first lived on Granville st. on the 3rd floor of a brand new tiny 1 bedroom apartment. We lived near a lot of clubs, and it was always noisy on week-ends.

After a year there, we knew we had to move - too small and noisy. At the time, we felt God was calling us to plant a church in Yaletown. So, we explored the possibility of buying an apartment in Yaletown. God miraculously led us to the beautiful apartment that we have enjoyed for the past 6 years.

Our apartment is large for downtown - 1100 sq. feet. It's on the 26th floor w. floor to ceiling windows in every room. The building has a gym, pool and hot tub. We are walking distance from everything downtown. In fact, for 3 years we didn't own a car, because we rarely needed one.

It's an amazing apartment, and a great investment as well. We plan to continue to rent it out over the next 2-3 years, including over the 2010 olympics.

The house we are moving to, we are renting for 10 months while the owners are living in Cambridge. The owners are the Froeses - a family from our church. Awesome people. And their house is awesome too! Huge - something we would never be able to afford w.out their generosity. We were there today moving some stuff, before the big move tomorrow.

I sat on the deck in the backyard and looked around. I felt a little bit like Woody Allen in one of his movies where he is staying in a cabin in the woods. He wakes up continually, thinking a wild animal is going to get him and he can't get used to the quiet.

The quiet is the first thing I noticed - and also the lack of human activity. Downtown, its pretty easy to immerse yourself into a flow of people walking down the street - out there its just cars, and a few people walking.

It is going to be an adjustment, but as I've said before - we both so strongly feel God's guidance in this whole thing. And anyways, we're only 35 minutes from downtown!

I can't wait to be moved in and settled - this transition thing is pretty stressful. And I still have to preach on Sunday!

We are several months out of even the most limited pandemic restrictions. I cannot remember the last time I wore a mask. When I see someone wearing a mask, it feels nostalgic - a reminder of a strange time when that person was the norm and I - the unmasked one would look strange. Coaster goes up (a little)

Unused photo from the Globe and Mail shoot. So, last night and all day today I was on the top floor of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Vancouver. Quite auspicious surroundings for church council/pastors meetings! there were stunning views of the North Shore mountains, Stanley Park and the downtown buildings. The meetings were lengthy, exhausting and a lot of work. Basically, FBC has been on a year long journey of crafting its vision statement and core values - we did it with the assistance of a coach from Outreach Canada. We are coming down the home stretch and needed to hammer out everything for presentation to the congregation. Today was the first day that I have begun to feel lighter and ready to resume the work. Although still feeling wounded from this whole mess, I'm ready to limp on. Where the Light Falls

I've read two books by Augustine - City of God and Confessions. I think I've read his confessions 3 times. I like him because he is a good writer, has lots of self-insight, and loves God passionately. He was very honest about his pre-Christian life. At one point he makes this observation: "I had my back toward the light, and my face toward the things on which the light falls." Most people have their back to the light - and they focus where his light falls. Where the light falls refers to God's common grace. God does not keep good things only for those who follow him. Because he is good he distributes his blessings and grace widely. Where the light falls are places of grace: art, music, beauty, sunshine, loving relationships, a baby's smile. But - these things are not the light - to enjoy and encounter the light, we must turn around and follow the rays of light back to the source. What is the source of beauty, love, and truth?
