starbucks X 3



i don't think i can have too many days like today. here's a run-through:

8:00 roll into the office - do devotions and finish a book on worship
-make some calls
fill out paperwork

10:00 Adam and Felicia come by for Felicia's moms group - i play with adam for a little bit

10:15 - Dan Watt, the head of church planting for my denomination comes by
-we head out - he wants to videotape around the church so we walk up to robson while he tapes different people and buildings
-we have coffee at the busiest starbucks in vancouver
-he sets up his video camera and tapes an interview with me on first@night - i don't actually know what the video is for
-he asks me to speak in december to some church planting trainers from various denominations in bc on the gospel and post-modernism

11:00 - back to the office, work on job descriptions for the various positions associated with first@night

12:00 - dim sum with felicia and adam

1:30 (back at the office now)- bruce kuhn drops by - bruce is a broadway actor who now has a full-time ministry travelling all over north america with a one man dramatic piece which is the re-telling of the gospel of luke - it is very very good
-bruce is the current artist in residence at regent
-i have booked bruce to perform at first@night in january
-we went over some of the logistics that he needs for the performance
-headed to a (different) starbucks and chatted about life

2:30-back at the office
-stare at my computer screen for about 5 minutes and try to figure out where and who i am
-work some more on the job descriptions
answer e-mails
make phone calls

3:00 - renee calls - she can meet

3:30 - we meet at the THIRD different starbucks for me today
-go over her position as refreshment coordinator for fan (first@night)

4:30-walk home
-play with adam and realize i could not have a day like today everyday

We are several months out of even the most limited pandemic restrictions. I cannot remember the last time I wore a mask. When I see someone wearing a mask, it feels nostalgic - a reminder of a strange time when that person was the norm and I - the unmasked one would look strange. Coaster goes up (a little)

Unused photo from the Globe and Mail shoot. So, last night and all day today I was on the top floor of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Vancouver. Quite auspicious surroundings for church council/pastors meetings! there were stunning views of the North Shore mountains, Stanley Park and the downtown buildings. The meetings were lengthy, exhausting and a lot of work. Basically, FBC has been on a year long journey of crafting its vision statement and core values - we did it with the assistance of a coach from Outreach Canada. We are coming down the home stretch and needed to hammer out everything for presentation to the congregation. Today was the first day that I have begun to feel lighter and ready to resume the work. Although still feeling wounded from this whole mess, I'm ready to limp on. Where the Light Falls

I've read two books by Augustine - City of God and Confessions. I think I've read his confessions 3 times. I like him because he is a good writer, has lots of self-insight, and loves God passionately. He was very honest about his pre-Christian life. At one point he makes this observation: "I had my back toward the light, and my face toward the things on which the light falls." Most people have their back to the light - and they focus where his light falls. Where the light falls refers to God's common grace. God does not keep good things only for those who follow him. Because he is good he distributes his blessings and grace widely. Where the light falls are places of grace: art, music, beauty, sunshine, loving relationships, a baby's smile. But - these things are not the light - to enjoy and encounter the light, we must turn around and follow the rays of light back to the source. What is the source of beauty, love, and truth?
