benny's grandslam



so last night i went to general motors place around the block from our apt. now in the past i have gone and enjoyed hockey games and concerts but last night was special. benny hinn was in town!

now those of you who don't know him, benny hinn is one of the biggest televangelsit faithhealers in the world. his tv show is broadcast in over 100 countries and his ministy rakes in 65 mil/yr.

so i went out of curiosity to see the buzz. he made at least one major exegetical mistake when he preached from one of the gospels.

he made the outlandish statement that the bible guarantees everyone will live to be at least 70 yrs. old in perfect health. he also said that EVERYONE willbe healed. but as i sat in the back during the "healing" part of the night i saw a lot of people not get out of their wheelchairs. i wondered how they felt as they were wheeled out of the arena last night. why didn't god heal them?

and what about me? i still wore my contacts and glasses today - god didn't heal me. benny hinn said that everyone would be healed but everyone did not get healed.

i have to admit when he preached the gospel message there was nothing i could disagree with and i was thrilled to see hundreds of people go forward to dedicate their lives to jesus christ.

hinn lives a lavish lifestyle which is in odds with the demands of the gospel. he is a mixed bag - i think he is sincere in his motives but he has been seduced by the power, wealth and fame that came to him.

i also don't like his hair or white suits.

Coaster goes up (a little)

Unused photo from the Globe and Mail shoot. So, last night and all day today I was on the top floor of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Vancouver. Quite auspicious surroundings for church council/pastors meetings! there were stunning views of the North Shore mountains, Stanley Park and the downtown buildings. The meetings were lengthy, exhausting and a lot of work. Basically, FBC has been on a year long journey of crafting its vision statement and core values - we did it with the assistance of a coach from Outreach Canada. We are coming down the home stretch and needed to hammer out everything for presentation to the congregation. Today was the first day that I have begun to feel lighter and ready to resume the work. Although still feeling wounded from this whole mess, I'm ready to limp on. Where the Light Falls

I've read two books by Augustine - City of God and Confessions. I think I've read his confessions 3 times. I like him because he is a good writer, has lots of self-insight, and loves God passionately. He was very honest about his pre-Christian life. At one point he makes this observation: "I had my back toward the light, and my face toward the things on which the light falls." Most people have their back to the light - and they focus where his light falls. Where the light falls refers to God's common grace. God does not keep good things only for those who follow him. Because he is good he distributes his blessings and grace widely. Where the light falls are places of grace: art, music, beauty, sunshine, loving relationships, a baby's smile.
