O Christmas Tree and The Mayor
I had this fantasy of going into the woods and cutting down a Christmas tree, a'la Clark Griswold of Christmas Vacation. In British Columbia, you can actually do it. You print up this license off a government web-site, and it permits you to cut down one tree, in these special government forests.
I though it would be cool, until I realized I would actually have to cut the tree down, drag it through the snow and strap it onto my car. Oh, yeah - the forest is in Squamish about an hour and a half from our house.
The idea devolved into going to a Christmas tree farm, where you still get to cut down a tree - but they give you the tools, and its all supervised in case you actually can't cut it.
After realizing, we'd still have to drive a long way, our idea further devolved into simply buying a tree from the Port Moody Garden Center, which we did this afternoon. We perused the various trees which ranged from short squat trees which looked more like Christmas bushes to large regal trees that looked like they should be in the lobby of some posh hotel.
We settled on a nice full tall tree. The guy working there took a chain saw to it for some reason. And then he and a girl working there covered it in plastic and strapped it to the roof of our Santa Fe. The drive home was filled with all kinds of anxiety. I could hear the plastic cover loudly flapping as we drove. I had reoccurring visions of the tree all of a sudden going air-borne and landing on the high-way, only to be trampled by an inconsiderate semi.
We got the thing home and just about died trying to get it into the house due to the weight and sharpness of the needles. Imagine trying to move a dead porcupine, the size of a calf, and you start to get the idea.
Once we wrestled the thing into our house, we had to put it in the planter thing it's supposed to sit in. We couldn't get it straight and finally had to prop a chair behind it.
The whole time we were trying to get it up, Sophia is yelling at us. We finally got it up, and we sat around it drinking hot starbucks drinks.
Tomorrow, I have a meeting with the mayor of Coquitlam! He has requested a meeting with all the pastors of the tri-cities (Port Moody, Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam). I am a pastor in Port Moody, so I will be on my way to see his worship tomorrow at 9:00. Should be fun.
