Leadership


Me and one of my favorite leaders.

I am in Syracuse New York.
A group of leaders from the church and I are attending the Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit.

This is an incredibly large event that makes the United Nations look like a city council of a small town.

170 000 attendees in 101 countries in 42 languages!

The main event is in suburban Chicago - but the leveraging of technology sends it out all over the world - including central New York, where I am.

The folks from our church are a music prof. from Ithaca College and a couple who work for InterVarsity at Cornell.

I have never attended the Leadership Summit, but have always wanted to.
My only regret now is not attending sooner!
What an amazing day.

Today's speakers included:

Bill Hybels
Colin Powell
Mark Burnett - the guy who has produced Survivor, Apprentice, The Voice and Shark Tank.
Patrick Lencioni - most likely the best consultant to corporations alive today.

All in all it was quite a stunning day of inspiration and information.

It will take some time to digest all I have taken in today.

I think something that stuck with me today is the need to overcome fear as a leader.

Many leaders abort visions prematurely because they fear failure. We need courage to give birth to grandiose visions.
This has challenged me to question what MY vision is - what do I want to see happening in the coming years in Bethel Grove Church and in Ithaca?
And how does my fear stand in the way of that?

How do I leverage what I have been gifted with for the furtherance of the Kingdom of God?

Wait and see.

Christmas in Vancouver

As you can see I've been fooling around with different templates, fonts, colours, etc. I like this one - Carla was using it, so I've followed her lead. The font appears small - I've enlarged it on this post. By the way - I've lost my site counter!!! When I made the template shift, it disappeared. Anyways - had another does of Christmas in Vancouver. Went on the bright lights train in Stanley Park. This was actually pretty good. The train goes for about 15 minutes through a well decorated part of the Park. There were a few odd images - along with Santa, snowmen and a nativity scene, there were also native americans and a leprechaun. City Fix

Dealing with suburban isolation This afternoon we headed downtown on a lark. Felicia took the kids to science world and I was dropped off at one of my favorite pubs: The Irish Heather in Gastown, which is quite a bit more upscale since it moved into new digs across the street, making me wonder if it is still my fave. What I liked about it before is it was a bit grubby, similar to some of the pubs I've been to in Dublin. I ran into one of my mentors: Brian Buhler. Brian is a local pastor who is one of the best preachers I have ever heard. I have known Brian since I was a Bible school student in 1993 - wow, 15 years! Brian was there with his wife and son. I joined them briefly and caught up a bit. I also worked on my sermon in the pub. Brian asked if I needed my "urban fix". I hadn't thought of it like that before. Exodus

This Sunday I am preaching on Exodus 2:15b-4. The passage includes the following text which I need to figure out a way to interpret and apply to life in 2008: 24 At a lodging place on the way, the LORD met Moses and was about to kill him. 25 But Zipporah took a flint knife, cut off her son's foreskin and touched Moses' feet with it. "Surely you are a bridegroom of blood to me," she said. 26 So the LORD let him alone. (At that time she said "bridegroom of blood," referring to circumcision.) Pray for me.
